The Middle East insurance markets continue to be propelled forward by comparatively
low insurance penetration combined with rapid economic development across the region.
Recent analysis has highlighted that total premiums generated by 13 MENA insurance
markets grew 17.1% year-on-year to US$31.4bn while overall insurance density lagged
international averages by more than 50% and regional insurance penetration was 1.55%
- far behind the world average of 6.6% - indicating that there is still significant
upside potential for further exciting growth in the Middle East insurance markets.
A Strategic Shift: Maintaining Growth Momentum While Boosting Technical Profitability
The increasingly competitive Middle East insurance market continues to experience
a period of significant change as leading industry players implement re-tooled strategies
to further translate this huge growth potential into reality. However, the region
also has a number of key challenges to tackle if this growth potential is to be fully
realized. Even in a high growth driven market such as the Middle East, insurance
players are increasingly having to address profitability challenges, including the
implementation of more risk adequate pricing levels together with a greater focus
on operational efficiency measures as they seek to balance the growth drive with
improved profitability. In addition, the question of fragmentation and the need for
consolidation amongst an over-supply of small players is also a key challenge that
the industry must address if it is to build the scale necessary for long-term success.
Furthermore, efforts towards creating an enhanced supervisory framework will enable
the sustainable development of the Middle East insurance industry.
Now in its 9th year, the Middle East Insurance Forum (MEIF 2013) is the region’s
largest and most significant annual platform for the international and regional insurance
industry to assess the potential, tackle the challenges and seize new growth opportunities
in the dynamic Middle East insurance markets. Hosted in strategic partnership with
the Central Bank of Bahrain, MEIF 2013 will take place on the 4th and 5th of February
2013 at the Gulf Hotel, Kingdom of Bahrain.
More than 500 delegates, representing decision-makers from Arab and international
insurance and reinsurance companies, regulatory agencies, brokers, banking and finance
organisations, will participate in the Forum. An international panel of expert speakers
